A Jonson Clarke-Harris volley in the first-half was enough to seal a fifth win in seven matches. Posh are fourth in League One ahead of a trip to leaders Hull City on Saturday (October 24).

Posh had never before won at Wigan in their nine previous Football League visits.

“That’s probably the best win of the season,” Ferguson stated. “Wigan have good players. They are a very good side, but we defended superbly and we could have had more goals ourselves.

“The only concern we had was in the last moments when Naismith hit the post, but then he’s a very good player for League One so we knew we would have to get through some tricky moments.

“But we stopped crosses and when the ball did come into the area we made sure we got a head on it. That’s three clean sheets in a row which is a great base to work from.

“The lads were disciplined. It’s very hard to pass through us. The mentality of the group and their desire was again impressive. There’s a lot I’m seeing that pleases me. We travelled up this morning so it’s been a long day, but the players are taking everything in their stride.

“I was delighted for Jonson. He might not have the goals he’d want, but he’s been excellent. He is such a handful. He occupied two centre backs in this game which helps the other attacking players.

“His goal was superbly taken. He showed excellent chest control and delivered a cool finish.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t find a second goal, but their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves.

“We’ve won five games out of seven and we’ve already played some very good sides. We’ve played Sunderland, Oxford, Fleetwood and Wigan who could all be up there at the end of the season.”

Ferguson substituted left-back Dan Butler for tactical reasons after he picked up an early caution.

Ferguson added: “It was brave to take him off, but I’d have been stupid to leave him on. He picked up an early yellow card and then committed too many other fouls so I had no choice really.

“Dan did well enough and he created the goal with a superb cross, but the fourth official told me he was on his last warning.

Niall Mason was outstanding in his place so it worked out well for us.”
