Posh moved up to fifth in League One after collecting a second straight win thanks to goals from Nathan Thompson and Reece Brown, just 48 hours after Robson passed away.

A shirt bearing Robson’s name was placed at either end of the ground for the duration of the match. Robson started his career at Northampton.

“That was satisfying, very very satisfying,” Ferguson stated. “It was a good way to finish off a difficult week and we dedicate the win to Tommy and the fans who couldn’t be here today.

“The tribute to Tommy today was very well organised and we’ll look to do something similar for our home game next week.

“It’s absolutely fitting we do that as the man was a legend, a really good player and a lovely man.

“Northampton is a hard place to come and get a result, but the lads were tactically spot on. They play a lot of men in the middle of the park so we set out to cause them problems out wide..

“The first goal was a brilliant example of that. We know how to cause problems for three centre-backs as we play it ourselves a lot. We wanted to switch the ball when possible and Dembele and Ward found space very well.

“They man marked Sammie Szmodics which I haven’t seen before, but Sammie just took him for a walk and left big spaces for others.

“Dembele obviously stood out. He can play up front, out wide or behind a striker and he’s exceptional. He must have been fouled 25 times today.

“And we mustn’t forget Christy Pym. He made a big save at 0-0 in a game when the first goal was always going to be important. He’s stepped up this season. His organising and his kicking was fantastic.

“I’m very pleased with the players. It was a good performance.

“We just lost a bit of rhythm in the second half. We started giving our first pass away and we had to do some defending, but we were very solid. We needed that second goal and when it came it was a very good one.

“It’s nice to play well in derby games. You want to play well, but winning is the main thing.”

Flynn Clarke was a surprise selection on the Posh substitutes’ bench after his international duty with Scotland Under 19s was called off because of a Covid scare.

Posh are nxt in League One action against last season’s losing play-off finalists Oxford United at the Weston Homes Stadium (October 17).
