Ferguson wants him back for the Bolton game on March 14, but his staff believe that will be too soon.

“I won’t do anything reckless,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson says his team must make sure they get the ‘small details’ right in the final 10 games of the League One season, or kiss goodbye to promotion to the Championship.

Ferguson reckons his side have thrown away three points in their last two League One games. He believes they should have drawn at promotion rivals Fleetwood instead of losing 2-1 and they should have won at Burton on Saturday (February 29) when they drew 1-1.

The absence of suspended top scorer Ivan Toney was a huge factor in both games, but the 25-goal striker is back for Saturday’s crunch game with Portsmouth at the Weston Homes Stadium (March 7).

“Of course Ivan is a massive player for us and his absence was always going to cause us a problem,” Ferguson stated.

“And that’s not disrespecting any other player as what Ivan offers is so different to everyone else. But we should have done better than we did and it’s just small details that have cost us.

“We gave away two soft goals at Fleetwood and at Burton we were dominating the game, took the lead, and then gave away another soft goal through a lack of concentration and the game completely changed.

“The bottom line is we missed a great opportunity to close the gap on the teams above us.

“We can’t afford to let opportunities like this slip away again in the last 10 matches.”
