Peterborough United manager believes his star man could play anywhere, injury updates and pride in a fantastic home record

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson believes Jack Taylor is so good he could play in the centre of defence as well as the centre of midfield.

Posh are set to welcome Taylor back into the starting line-up for the League One game with Blackpool at the Weston Homes Stadium tomorrow (November 21, 3pm), providing he passes an obligatory Covid test after 10 days with the Ireland under 21 and senior squads.

If available Taylor, who moved to Posh from National League Barnet for a reported £500k in January, can expect to replace Louis Reed from the side that struggled so badly at Crewe last weekend.

“The game didn’t suit Louis last week,” Ferguson said. “He needed the team to play a bit better as he had too much ground to cover and that doesn’t suit him. I took him off early as the game suited Ethan Hamilton more, but Louis hasn’t let us down this season and there will be games coming up that will suit him.

“Jack should be back in good spirits. I know he didn’t play, but just being around the senior Ireland squad will have been good for him. It’s probably good for us he didn’t play as he will be nice and rested.

“Jack’s been excellent for us since he walked through the door. He’s added goals to a great all-round game this season. He can pass, he can score and he can tackle. He’s even good enough in the air to be able to play centre-back comfortably.”

Teenage forward Flynn Clarke will miss tomorrow because of a hamstring issue, while Posh defender Nathan Thompson should be fit for the FA Cup tie with Chorley on November 28, but Ferguson might hold him back for the League One trip to AFC Wimbledon on December 1.

Young striker Ricky-Jade Jones is a week ahead of schedule following surgery on his leg and could be back in training early in December.

Posh are keen to extend an outstanding home record in 2020 against in-form opponents tomorrow. They haven’t lost a single game at the Weston Homes Stadium this year.

“We’ve had a good week’s training to get the Crewe game out of our system,” Ferguson added.

“It’s all about getting the basics right tomorrow as our numbers re distances covered and high intensity sprints were way down on normal last weekend. We want to be solid and to keep a good shape as we know we have forward players who will score goals.

“We’re proud of our home record this year and we want to extend it. We’ve played seven of our 12 games away from home so these two home matches coming up are important.”

Posh also host Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday (November 24, 7pm kick off).

Posh travel to Altrincham for a second round FA Youth Cup tie tonight (Friday). The winners will play either Hull or Doncaster in the third round.
