Peterborough United have supported Tranmere Rovers’ proposal to adopt a points-per-game average, with a margin of error, in League One as well as an eight-team play-off battle

Peterborough United have supported a Tranmere Rovers proposal to adopt a points-per-game method with a margin of error built in to award promotions, play-off places and determine relegations in League One in the 2019-20 season.

All new proposals had to be submitted to the EFL by 2pm today ahead of their weekly Board meeting tomorrow (June 3). The Board will decide what proposals, if any, will be taken forward to a clubs vote on Monday (June 8).

Posh, along with several clubs, saw a proposal to expand the play-offs to eight teams rejected by the EFL Board last week.

The Tranmere proposal would mean relegation only for bottom two Bolton and Southend. There would be an eight-team play-off battle and League One would have 25 teams for one season.

Posh would finish seventh under the Tranmere model, but would be included in the expanded play-off competition. Posh will finish seventh and miss out on the play-offs if, as currently expected, a straight unweighted points-pre-game is used and the usual four-team play-off takes place.

Posh co-owner Dr Jason Neale said: “We contributed to and supported the Tranmere proposal which sees a PPG with a margin for error used to decide who is relegated and which teams secure play-off spots. Under the proposal Tranmere stay up, the league is expanded to 25 teams for one year and eight teams can opt into the play-offs.

“We and several other clubs submitted a proposal to expand the play-offs which the EFL board rejected (last week). “However, Tranmere have forced their hand and they are now promised to send ‘new’ proposals for EFL membership voting provided the framework is met, which within the Tranmere proposal it is.”

The only proposals currently in front of the EFL clubs are to alter the regulations which would then allow an unweighted PPG to be used to determine the final standings.

Both proposals need 51% of the vote to pass. All 71 EFL clubs vote on changing the regulations so 37 votes are required (36 votes only equals 50.7%) and then 23 League One clubs would then vote on the second proposal when 12 votes would be needed.
