The 20-year-old has a big fan in Posh boss Darren Ferguson even though he has yet to hold down a regular place in the first-team squad.

Kanu, who has signed a new three-and-a-half year deal, has started just one League One match this season, at Portsmouth in December, but then picked up a nasty eye injury in a training accident which has kept him out of action ever since.

“Idris signing a new deal is great news as I rate him very highly,” Ferguson said. “He did very well this season right up until he picked up his injury.

“He was on loan at Boreham Wood when I returned to the club last season and we had a good chat when he returned. He had to get himself fitter which he has done.

“I have high hopes for him. He has a lot of potential. He’s quick and powerful and he can play in several positions.

“There is some work to be done on his final ball and finishing, but that’s always the hardest part.

“When we sort that out we will have a real player on our hands.”

Kanu moved to Posh from Aldershot aged 17 in 2017. He has made 36 appearances (28 as a substitute) for the club and scored his first goal against Northampton in an EFL Trophy tie earlier this season.

Kanu is expected to be fit for the League One match at Fleetwood on February 15.
