Peterborough United defender set for long awaited return after 15 months on the sidelines

Peterborough United defender Sam Hughes is set for a return to action this week after almost 15 months on the sidelines.

Hughes, who was named club captain at the start of last season, has not been involved in any match since the pre-season friendly away at Colchester United on July 25, 2025. His last competitive appearance came in April 2025.

The 29-year-old joined the club on loan from Stockport County in January, 2025 and made the move permanent the following summer. Remarkably, he is still yet to appear for Posh as a permanent player.

He initially suffered a calf problem and there was hopes that he would return at the beginning of this season, but he suffered a setback in training just days before the season opening Carabao Cup tie at Bristol Rovers.

Now though, Hughes is set to appear for the Under 21s against Sheffield Wednesday at the club’s training ground on Wednesday (1pm kick-off).

Posh boss Robbie Savage said: “Sam's been great around the group and has really brought that experience we need, along with Tom O’Connor.

“The way Lucca Mendonca, Josh Feeney and Evan Weir have played at centre-back though, there is competition for places and there’s going to be some unhappy players. I understand that, but the key is to keep those players out of the side feeling as important as the ones who are playing.”

O’Connor is also due to play against Sheffield Wednesday in what will be his third match for the U21s as he ramps up his return from injury.
