It’s a cost-cutting measure as Posh prepare for life after the coronavirus crisis. Head analyst Sean O’Callaghan, who Posh manager Darren Ferguson inherited from his predecessor Steve Evans, has also left London Road.

Mclean only penned a three-year deal in May, 2019. Assistant manager Gavin Strachan is expected to take on most coaching duties.

Mclean was a star striker for Posh as they won back-to-back promotions under current first-team manager Darren Ferguson in 200708 & 2008-09.

Ferguson said: “I would like to thank Aaron and Sean for their efforts on behalf of the football club. Sean has been an important member of the backroom staff in his role.

“Aaron is a legend of the football club and will always be a legend of this football club.

“Unfortunately, in today’s climate, tough decisions have to be made for the long-term benefit of the football club. I wish both well in the future.”

Mclean said: “It is with regret that my time at Peterborough United has come to an end. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone at the club for all the love and support I’ve been given over not only this season, but from the moment I walked through the door 14 years ago.

“I’ve had the pleasure of playing with some amazing players and working with some brilliant people, forming amazing relationships and sharing some amazing times with the fans.

“The club has always been close to my heart and a joy to be part of. I will miss everyone dearly.

“I wish nothing, but success and happiness to everyone associated with Peterborough United.
