Peterborough United co-owner says £5 million isn’t anywhere near enough to buy Ivan Toney amid reported interest from Celtic

Peterborough United have again warned the pack of clubs chasing the signature of Ivan Toney that they won’t get the highly-rated striker on the cheap.

Posh are expecting to sell the 24 year-old before the start of the new League One season starts on September 12, but they are determined to hold out for a fee in the region of £10 million.

The Scottish press are reporting today (July 29) that Celtic have had a £5 million offer rejected for a player who scored 26 goals in a shortened 2019-20 campaign. Posh director of football Barry Fry has today confirmed Posh did turn down a Celtic offer made last Friday, but did not disclose the size of the bid.

A tweet from Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony last night appeared to trigger the latest bout of speculation. He said: “Look, we have had multiple bids for him (Toney) from Prem/Champ & one from Scotland. As expected. I wont go into who etc as that’s private. As of today he is still our player.”

The Peterborough Telegraph has previously reported interest in Toney from Celtic and their Scottish Premier League rivals Rangers, but it’s felt unlikely either would match the Posh valuation.

And last night MacAnthony echoed public comments previously made by Posh director of football Barry Fry by commenting on Celtic’s alleged bid: “Don’t believe figures quoted for any player. We would keep Ivan Toney rather than sell him for this. Cheers.”

Celtic are now coached by former Posh assistant manager Gavin Strachan

It’s also been reported recently that a club - believed to be Brentford -have had a bid accepted for Toney, but Posh havve declined to comment on that story.
