The move has been introduced by the EFL to guard against player injury and fatigue during a more compact season than normal. Posh start a run of nine competitive matches in 28 days on Saturday.

There will still be a maximum of seven named substitutes in Leagues One and Two. Championship clubs can now name nine substitutes.

Some clubs objected to the change on the grounds it would favour those with the finances to build larger squads.

Gillingham’s former Posh boss Steve Evans was against the move, but Posh co-owner is in favour because of the hectic schedule.

“It’s the right decision with everyone playing three games a week,” MacAnthony said.
