Peterborough United chairman enters League One clubs meeting armed with some deadly facts

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony will warn the rest of League One in today’s (May 15) EFL meeting that the cost of declaring the 2019-20 season null and void far exceeds the cost of playing to a finish.

MacAnthony revealed last night he was representing six promotion-seeking clubs - Oxford, Fleetwood, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Ipswich as well as Posh - in today’s crunch conference call. They are all committed to completing the season.

During a lively debate with Salford City owner Gary Nevile on Sky Sports this morning MacAnthony said the cost of season ticket refunds, loss of sponsorship, TV refunds. legal bills and refunds to the EFL and Premier League could cost clubs up to £800k apiece if the current season was abandoned.

Neville had said the cost of completing the season would include £150k spent on coronavirus testing and another £150k on bringing players out of furlough.

MacAnthony also said he’d be frustrated to have lost out after following the EFL advice on how to deal with the coronavirus crisis up to this point.

The EFL’s stated position is to complete the season, but it’s expected any vote of League One and League Two clubs would lead to the season being voided.
