Peterborough United boss insists Posh weren’t complacent they just weren’t good enough to beat League One’s bottom club

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson rejected accusations of complacency after his side failed to beat League One’s bottom club Burton Albion at the Weston Homes Stadium tonight (October 27).

Posh’s five-game winning streak - and an eight-game winning run at home - came to an end after Burton twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw. Both sides had chances to win the game with Posh substitute Ryan Broom missing the best of them after racing through on goal eight minutes from time.

The result dropped Posh from second to fourth, but they are just three points off top spot ahead of a home game with lowly Shrewsbury Town on Saturday (October 31).

Ferguson was disappointed with the result, but preferred to look at the bigger picture in his post-match press conference.

“We’re all disappointed not to win,” Ferguson admitted. “But in the grand scheme of things we’ve taken 16 points from the last 18 and that is great form.

“This league is relentless. You have to work so hard to win any game and I wasn’t kidding when I said before the game that Burton are in a false position.

“The key period for me was the start of the second half as we were dominant for 15 minutes. We took the lead and looked like scoring a third goal, but didn’t quite manage it. If we had scored again we probably would have gone on to win comfortably.

“It was crucial as I never felt comfortable. They were a threat and the defending for their second goal was very disappointing. You can’t let players shoot from 20 yards out with no pressure.

“I’ve seen teams lose games like that before and it’s important mot to lose if you can’t win. At the end of the day we weren’t good enough to beat them and we just move onto the next game.

“We started both halves well, but for most of the first half we lacked aggression in the middle of the park. There was no complacency and there was no lack of energy and desire, but we didn’t pick up the second balls.

“Their first goal was excellent football, but we gave ourselves too many unnecessary problems defensively.

“We were better in the second-half. Reece Brown and Jack Taylor were very good and of course we had a great chance to win it towards the end through Ryan Broom. I don’t think he realised how much time he had, but we can’t blame him for not winning.”
