Peterborough United boss insists getting out of the relegation zone would be a huge psychological boost

Peterborough United manager Luke Williams admits it would be a huge psychological boost if his team clambered out of the League One relegation zone on Tuesday.

Posh will jump up three places to 18th if they beat Stevenage at the Weston Homes Stadium tomorrow night (7.45pm kick off). It would be a fifth straight win since Williams took charge, but they will be facing a team who would go top if they won.

Posh have been in the bottom four for the entire season. Their current position of 21st is the highest they’ve achieved.

Williams, who watched Stevenage draw 0-0 at home to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, said: “Psychologically it would be nice to get out. On its own it wouldn’t mean much, but it would give everyone at the club a boost. We could then start to look upwards, but at the same time we are working on a very small sample size so we need to keep our good form going for much longer to even think about anything apart from getting out of trouble.

“What the players have show shown me, and themselves, is what they are capable of doing. We’ve beaten very good sides and our last performance was an excellent one.

"The way we went our business was very pleasing. The key to our good run has been the commitment of the players. They've worked hard for each other with the intensity of their running and with the way they’ve defended their own area.

"This now has to become our standard and we will certainly need to have those attributes tomorrow against a very strong Stevenage side.

"I went to watch them on Saturday and they are clearly a team who could cause us problems. They are together as a unit, they are competitive and they have a really obvious team ethic which is why they are in such a good position. They will be tough opponents.

"I’d like us to become known as a physical and competitive side as well. You need to be good at more than one part of the game to be successful. The best teams play entertaining football, but they also defend well and that’s the balance we want.”

Posh report no fresh injury worries ahead of tomorrow’s game. Midfielder Matt Garbett and central defender David Okagbue, who missed the last Posh game, a 3-0 home win over Stockport County, because of international duty are available to face Stevenage.
