Toney had never previously been selected for any England age group team so his progress four years after moving to Posh from Newcastle United has been remarkable.

It’s a selection that’s been warmly received around the country, especially at Posh who splashed out around £250k on Toney in August, 2018 and sold him to Brentford in a package that could cost the Bees £10 million in August, 2020.

It’s thought Posh will receive a considerable extra payment from Brentford should Toney be capped, although the club are bound by a confidentiality agreement so can’t comment on the specifics of the deal.

Toney scored 49 goals in 94 Posh appearances (77 starts). He’s since scored 52 goals in 96 appearances for Brentford (89 starts) including five goals in seven Premier League appearances this season.

Seaman made his Football League debut for Posh in August, 1982 and went on to make 106 appearances for the club before moving to Birmingham City for £100k in 1984.

Seaman also played for QPR before becoming a multi-trophy winning goalkeeper at Arsenal. He won 75 caps for England and played at two World Cups.

There have been near England misses for other Posh players. Midfielder Jimmy Bullard was included in an England squad in 2009 when a Fulham player, but didn’t get on the pitch. Goalkeeper Joe Lewis was at Posh in 2008 when he was called-up as injury cover, but he didn’t play either.

Former on-loan Posh players to be subsequently capped by England include Zat Knight (2 caps), Ben White (4), Danny Rose (29) and Jake Livermore (7).
