Ipswich Town manager felt his side played well and were worth at least a point against Peterborough United

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert insisted his team were ‘really good’ in today’s (January 23) 1-0 home defeat to Peterborough United.

Lambert’s comments will come as a surprise to most who sat through a game with very little quality on show from either side. Posh won the match thanks to an horrendous miskick from Ipswich defender Mark McGuinnes which flew into the corner of his own net just over 20 minutes from time.

Ipswich have an awful record against the leading League One sides and they’ve now lost five of their last six games at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys are now ninth in League One, seven points behind third-placed Posh.

Today’s defeat would have been heavier if Posh top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris hadn’t smacked a first-half penalty over the bar.

But Lambert told the Ipswich Evening Star: “It was a really good game, I thought we were really good.

“I’m really proud of them for the way they worked. I couldn’t ask any more. We were on the front foot.

“We had so many nice opportunities to score.

“I don’t know if it was a penalty. Maybe it was. I don’t know. Then it’s an unfortunate own goal.

“I don’t think anybody would have walked away from this stadium thinking a draw would have been unfair.

“We just need a little break at the minute. That’s what it is. But the effort, the commitment, everything you need, the basics of the game was there. I can’t fault them for the performance.

“There’s a way to get beat. If you get beat you go down fighting.”

Ipswich suffered an unfortunate blow before the game as latest signing Josh Harrop was ruled out of the game after testing positive for Covid.
