Hull were knocked off top spot in League One by McCann’s former club who came from behind to win 2-1 at the KCOM Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Siriki Dembele. Posh have moved above Hull into second by virtue of a head-to-head result as the clubs’ points, goal difference and goals scored are all identical.

McCann told BBC Humberside: “In the first half we were excellent, the shape of the team was good and we disciplined in terms of what we were doing. We knew they were a bit of a threat in the attacking areas, but we coped with them well.

“We scored a good goal and we got into some really good areas in the pitch, but we just didn’t get that second goal.

“In the second-half we started similar, In fact we started quite well, but then we get done off a cross and it felt to me that there were too many crosses coming into our box.

“We just weren’t getting close enough to the crosser and we end up losing Clarke-Harris in our box.

“When you’re getting out to people crossing the ball, you’ve got to get closer. We were a little bit lacklustre on the first goal.

“For their second goal, there was a bit of skill from Joe Ward which did Callum Elder and it’s just a pull-back and a shot which goes in with a deflection.

“We have one at the other end which hits the post and that’s unfortunate.

“I don’t think they had many other opportunities, I thought we were in control of what we were doing - again, we just didn’t get that second goal to equalise because I felt that had we got that one, we’d have gone on to win the game.”
