But how does his current squad compare with the only Posh team to go up automatically from the third tier, the 2008-09 side who finished second behind Leicester City, yet ahead of Leeds United (fourth), Millwall (fifth), Huddersfield Town (ninth) and Brighton (16th)?
We’ve used the most common starting XI from both eras to make our judgement.
We’ve lined the teams up in a 4-4-2 formation to make it easier to make comparisons and it was a hard fought battle between two gifted teams put together by Ferguson and chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
Posh picked up 89 points in the League One season from 12 years ago and finished two points clear of third-placed MK Dons.
After 29 matches of that season, Posh had 53 points. The current side have 58 from 29 matches following their 3-0 win at Plymouth on Tuesday night.
Posh also went up to second tier of the Football League in 1991-92 and 2010-11, but after winning the play-offs on both occasions.
Player marks are out 10...

9.
LEFT-WING: Georg Boyd (pictured) v Siriki Dembele. GEORGE could teach Dembele a thing or two about combining great natural ability with a terrific work ethic. A perfect attacking player in back-to-back promotions and beyond. SIRIKI is the most naturally gifted player in the current squad whose impact would have been greater, but for a transfer request distraction. Very fast, very skilful. VERDICT: Boyd wins 10-8.

10.
STRIKER: Craig Mackail-Smith (pictured) v Sammie Szmodics. CRAIG was another star man unafraid to work hard and he became the top scorer from a brilliant front three. Relentless running and high quality finishing for 23 goals earns him top marks. SAMMIE's start to the season goals-wise and impact-wise was slow, but he always ran aggressively and he’s been getting the rewards in recent weeks. VERDICT: Craig wins 10-8.

11.
STRIKER: Aaron Mclean v Johnson Clarke-Harris. AARON was a smiling assassin, a deadly finisher and superb in the air for a not particularly tall centre-forward. A non-stop menace for defenders who bagged 17 goals. JONSON is enjoying an outstanding first season for the club so far with 21 goals. He’s finished consistently well, but his touch and passing accuracy have been steadily improving. A key player, if not the key player. VERDICT: A draw 9-9. TOTAL SCORES 2008-09 side 93, 2020-21 side 90.
