But how does his current squad compare with the only Posh team to go up automatically from the third tier, the 2008-09 side who finished second behind Leicester City, yet ahead of Leeds United (fourth), Millwall (fifth), Huddersfield Town (ninth) and Brighton (16th)?
We’ve used the most common starting XI from both eras to make our judgement.
We’ve lined the teams up in a 4-4-2 formation to make it easier to make comparisons and it was a hard fought battle between two gifted teams put together by Ferguson and chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
Posh picked up 89 points in the League One season from 12 years ago and finished two points clear of third-placed MK Dons.
After 29 matches of that season, Posh had 53 points. The current side have 58 from 29 matches following their 3-0 win at Plymouth on Tuesday night.
Posh also went up to second tier of the Football League in 1991-92 and 2010-11, but after winning the play-offs on both occasions.
Player marks are out 10...

5.
CENTRE-BACK: Gaby Zakuani (pictured) v Mark Beevers. GABY is one of the greatest Posh warriors. Brave, fearless and always committed. Not the prettiest in possession, but a defensive rock at the back. MARK has been a very consistent centre-back this term, one who defends his penalty area impressively. Could be more of a threat when attacking set-pieces, but a fine defender. VERDICT: Gaby takes it 9-8. Photo: Midlands

6.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Dean Keates (pictured) v Reece Brown. DEAN was a combative little midfielder who popped up with important goals, scoring five in this promotion season. His experience and knowhow were invaluable. REECE has not been at his neat-passing best this season, but he complements Jack Taylor well and he claimed his first Posh goal at Cobblers. VERDICT: A draw 7-7.

7.
CENTRAL MIDFIELD: Paul Coutts (pictured) v Jack Taylor. PAUL was a stylish and smooth runner with the ball. He was an eye-catching performer with one major flaw - he never scored a goal for Posh. JACK is as good an all-round midfielder seen at London Road for many years. He can tackle, pass, win aerial duels and he scores goals. He will even get better. VERDICT: A win for Jack 9-8.

8.
RIGHT WING: Chris Whelpdale (pictured) v Joe Ward. CHRIS was an unsung hero of this side. The boy from Billericay hugged the right touchline and was great at claiming far post goals, seven in 29 games in this season. JOE is a wide player who is constantly improving as a wing-back or a winger. Great crosser of he ball at times and scores spectacular goals. 10 assists this season. VERDICT: Joe wins 8-7.
