Club officials will no doubt be scouring the list of retained and released players from Championship and League One sides to see if anyone takes their fancy.
Posh need a goalkeeper, a couple of full-backs and a pair of central midfielders so the Peterborough Telegraph went searching on their behalf. We also threw in a couple of centre-backs in case Ronnie Edwards departs and a striker given the current forward line’s regular injury woes.

5. ALEX SMITHIES
Posh need a goalkeeper and Smithies is a decent one with bags of experience. He's just been released by Cardiff City after making 30 Championship appearances last season. He's 32 just a year older than Dai Cornell. Photo: Dan Istitene

6. WILL BOYLE
This strapping 26 year-old centre-back has been on the Posh radar before and is now available on a free transfer. If Posh are interested in strengthening at centre-back, and they could be if Ronnie Edwards leaves, they would face stiff competition for a player who would not now command a fee. Huddersfield and Portsmouth have both shown interest in Boyle. Photo: Pete Norton

7. LUKE FREEMAN
Sheffield United have already released this 30 year-old midfielder who once played a key role in a League One title success for Bristol City. Photo: Julian Finney

8. TOMAS HOLY
This giant goalkeeper has played consistently for Gillingham and Ipswich at League One level, although the Tractor Boys have just released him. Posh would probably prefer to see if Steven Benda becomes available from Swansea. Photo: Stephen Pond
