EFL are slammed for assuming their proposal will win the day at the decisive League One vote

The beleagured EFL have come under more fire for pre-empting tomorrow’s (June 9) crunch vote on the immediate future of the 2019-20 League One season.

The EFL have confirmed that the players and staff of four clubs - believed to be Wycombe, Oxford, Fleetwood and Portsmouth - have been tested for Covid-19. Those four clubs would contest the League One play-offs if an EFL Board recommendation that the regular season is curtailed and a points-per-game average is used to finalise league positions is passed.

Other proposals are to be discussed tomorrow, including one from Tranmere Rovers that would include an eight-team play-off competition, but the selective testing suggests the EFL are confident their own proposal will win the day and that is ‘unfair’ according to Tranmere vice-chairman Nicola Palios.

Mrs Palios said: “How can clubs have a fair vote on Tuesday re our proposals when the EFL have only done Covid testing for clubs who would be in the play-offs under their proposal and not ours? And have struck the deal for TV assuming theirs will go through? This is NOT a fair process.”

The EFL confirmed: “Following the first round of COVID-19 testing in League One, the EFL can confirm that 135 players and club staff were tested from four League One clubs over the course of Wednesday 3 June, Thursday 4 June, Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June with zero individuals testing positive.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony paid for the testing of his own players several weeks after accepting guidance from the EFL that League One would eventually resume.
