Burton boss believes his side could have finished Peterborough United off in the closing stages

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough insisted his side were the likeliest winners in the closing stages of a 1-1 draw with Peterborough United at the Pirelli Stadium today (February 29).

Posh were the dominant force until John Brayford equalised Mo Eisa’s strike midway through the half. That goal lifted Burton who missed a glorious chance of winning the game through substitute Ruan Fraser in the 90th minute.

Clough told the Burton FC official website: “It was a keenly contested game. They certainly had the better of it in the first half. We made a mistake with the formation by going the same way as last week, but changed it around after half an hour and looked better from then on.

“We had to defend well in the first half as they had the majority of the play and the ball without creating too many clear cut chances. It was difficult conditions to create stuff today for both teams even though we both tried to get it down and play.

“Then we started the second half well, but make a mistake and had to go chasing the game. That’s the only thing that’s holding us back really. We know we are capable of scoring goals we just have to stop making defensive mistakes.

“We said to the players at half-time that one might be enough today. If we hadn’t made that mistake our goal would have been enough and it was a brilliant header from John Brayford. He likes going up for corners. We don’t always let him go but he likes getting in there and it was a good goal from him.

“We got better as the game wore on and in the last half an hour or so I thought we played very well. We tried to make positive substitutions to try and win the game. We bought Reece Hutchinson on as we thought he would get forward more than Colin Daniel and then bringing Scott Fraser and Nathan Broadhead on was about them trying to get a goal and win us the game. Scotty has very nearly done it and then Jamie Murphy is not far away with almost the last kick of the game. I thought if anyone was going to win it in the last 20 minutes it was us.

“The rest of the season is about trying to win every game and we were very close to doing it today.”

Burton are 12th, nine points behind seventh-placed Posh with a game in hand. Posh are six points off top spot and a point outside the play-offs and second-placed Coventry host fifth-placed Sunderland tomorrow (March 1).
