Barnsley boss pleased with how his side played in a battle between two of the youngest sides in the EFL

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel was happy with his side’s performance at Peterborough United even though they ultimately bowed out of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shoot out.

‘The Tykes’ were a few minutes away from winning when Danny Ormerod made it 3-3 with a firm header. Posh then won the shootout 7-6 with Harrison Jones striking the decisive spot-kick after Alex Bass had saved a weak Luke Alker effort.

It was a match between two of the youngest teams in League One. The average age of the Barnsley starting line-up was 23, slightly older than the Posh team.

Stendel told the Barnsley Chronicle: “We started very well, but then had 20 minutes when we didn’t control the game and conceded two goals. But after that we played a really good game, created chances and controlled the game.

“We are really young but it’s not an excuse. We know we are young and we want to play with a young team.

“We could have scored more than one goal with the chances we had in the second half. We pressed Peterborough in their own half, winning every second ball, but in the last 10 minutes we were a little bit passive and missed some attacking situations.

"I told the players I was really happy with our reaction to the last two games and it’s hard because we could have gone home with a victory.”

Barnsley have now conceded 11 goals in their last three matches after defeats at home to Stevenage (1-5) and at Plymouth (0-3).
