The visitors won 4-0 against a side who had hot-headed full-back Tayo Edun sent off in the first half and who would beat Birmingham City 2-1 at Wembley in the Vertu Trophy Final eight days later. It wasn’t even Cobblers’ biggest win at Posh because they won 5-0 in a Division Four game in 1985 when Posh had goalkeeper John Turner sent off in the early stages forcing defender Jimmy Holmes to don the gloves.
Anyway enough of that. Cheer yourselves up by knowing the overall record in Football League clashes between the neighbours at London Road is led by Posh by a massive margin of 18-8 with four draws.
Here are the last 10 Posh EFL wins against Cobblers at home. Posh had won the previous six before last season’s debacle.
9. 6-0 April 1984, Division Four
The biggest Posh win over Cobblers. It was a pretty poor Posh side as well with the goals coming from Alan Waddle (2m pictured), Errington Kelly 2, Jimmy Holmes and Paddy Rayment. Only 3,481 fans watched the game Photo: David Lowndes
10. 2-0 March 1983, Division Four
Late goals from Micky Gynn and Colin Clarke (pictured) secured this comfortable win. Photo: David Lowndes
