The visitors won 4-0 against a side who had hot-headed full-back Tayo Edun sent off in the first half and who would beat Birmingham City 2-1 at Wembley in the Vertu Trophy Final eight days later. It wasn’t even Cobblers’ biggest win at Posh because they won 5-0 in a Division Four game in 1985 when Posh had goalkeeper John Turner sent off in the early stages forcing defender Jimmy Holmes to don the gloves.
Anyway enough of that. Cheer yourselves up by knowing the overall record in Football League clashes between the neighbours at London Road is led by Posh by a massive margin of 18-8 with four draws.
Here are the last 10 Posh EFL wins against Cobblers at home. Posh had won the previous six before last season’s debacle.

5. 1-0 March 2009, League One
A famous win for a team heading for promotion against a team heading for relegation. Posh centre-back Gaby Zakuani was sent off after seven minutes, but Posh still won with a Charlie Lee header. Lee is pictured celebrating his goal, Photo: Joe Dent

6. 2-0 October 2001, Division Two
Some big names have scored for Posh v Cobblers including Jimmy Bullard *pictured) in this game, from the penalty spot. Wembley matchwinner Andy Clarke also netted. Photo: PT

7. 1-0 January 2000, Division Three
Another Posh team on the way to promotion won this game with a second-half Jason Lee (pictured) strike. This was the season when Posh were in disarray at Christmas, losing 5-0 at home to Rotherham on Boxing Day before selling their best two players, Matthew Etherington and Simon Davies, to Spurs and then sacking popular coach Paul Ashworth. Wayne Turner arrived as coach and he and manager Barry Fry masterminded a promotion from Division Three through the play-offs culminating in a 1-0 Wembley win over Darlington in the final. Photo: PT

8. 1-0 February 1991, Division Four
Chris Turner had not long been appointed Posh manager and the charge was on for automatic promotion. A Mick Halsall (pictured) goal ensured Cobblers didn’t stand in their way. Not many other teams did either as Posh secured promotion on the final day of the Fourth Division season with a 2-2 draw from 2-0 down at Chesterfield. Photo: David Lowndes
