I would change formation to a 4-2-3-1 for tonight’s Championship fixture at Reading (September 14, 8pm) and try and exploit the worst defence in the Championship with pace and trickery!
5. FRANKIE KENT
Saturday was a huge disappointment after some excellent defensive displays from Kent, but he should still be selected no matter what formation is deployed. He could play on the left of two centre-backs enabling Thompson to look after Edwards.
6. JACK TAYLOR
Enough of this nursing him back from injury and illness nonsense. Central midfielder Taylor is one of the best players in the squad and he has to start playing. Being cautious doesn't suit the manager or this club.
7. CONOR COVENTRY
Tough to form an opinion on the newboy after one game when his team were outclassed so here's hoping he can get his foot on the ball in midfield and set the more attacking players away, while also protecting the back four. Not too much to ask!
8. JOE WARD
His form away from home demands he should be dropped tonight, but I'm taking him away from a wing-back role and playing him as part of a three-man support team behind a sole striker. Ward's defensive work as a wing-back was dreadful on Saturday, but he's the best right-sided attacker in the squad by some distance so I'm giving him another opportunity to prove he doesn't only turn it on at home.
