A home tie against lower-ranked opposition was the preferred Posh option, rather than an away game at a gifted League One rival, albeit one currently struggling at the wrong end of the table.
But you never know the game might match the drama of the most memorable Posh FA Cup ties that I’ve witnessed...
1.
Bradford City (a), 2018. Ivan Toney’s hat-trick of goals and Conor O’Malley’s hat-trick of penalty shootout saves after a 4-4 draw at Valley Parade. Posh had thrown away a 2-0 lead in the first tie at London Road, but emerged victorious on penalties after a topsy-turvey replay thriller. Toney's opening goal from close to the halfway line was a sign of the greatness to come. He's pictured completing his hat-trick. Photo: Midlands
2.
v West Brom (h), 2016 Another penalty shootout, but this one ended in failure after Posh had scared the life out of a Premier League team. Martin Samuelsen, Chris Forrester and Jon Taylor were outstanding in two draws (2-2 & 1-1). Taylor scored in both games. He's pictured scoring in the replay. Photo: Midlands
3.
Spurs (h), 1994. Posh were within five minutes of beating Spurs at London Road after Jason Brissett's late goal, but Jason Dozzell equalised with a header. It finished 1-1 and Brissett was pictured celebrating his goal in the dressing room bath. Photo: Midlands
4.
v Spurs (a) 1994. Posh came from behind to draw 1-1 at White Hart Lane in the replay thanks to a Ken Charlery goal. It went to penalties when 16 year-old Posh forward Andrew Furnell showed plenty of bottle to take one, but Ian Walker saved it. Posh 'keeper Fred Barber is pictured consoling Furnell.
