A hotel with no air con and windows that wouldn't open didn't excuse a poor Peterborough United performance in Plymouth, but chairman impressed with the instant response from his players

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes the four-day stay in Devon to play two matches against Plymouth Argyle rebounded on his side.

Posh won 2-0 at Home Park in an EFL Cup tie before losing 2-0 in a League One fixture.

MacAnthony’s men delivered a limp display in the league game, but there were some mitigating circumstances.

The chairman revealed on the latest edition of his Hard Truth podcast the Posh travelling party stayed in a hotel with no air conditioning and with windows that wouldn’t open, during one of the hottest weeks of the year!

MacAnthony was impressed though with how the players reacted when they saw off Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Tuesday to move up to second in League after four matches.

"It probably rebounded on us going down to Devon for four days because we ended up in a hotel without any air conditioning and with windows that didn’t open!,” MacAnthony revealed.

“In hindsight we would have been better off playing the cup game on Tuesday rather than Wednesday and travelling back to spend time in our own beds. It cost us £14k to find that out.

"That’s not me trying to deliver an excuse though. Plymouth are a very good side who were miles better than us on the day and fair play to them for that.

“They outplayed us and outworked us.

“It was a great bounce back from the players against Sheffield Wednesday though. We were all under par apart from the goalkeeper at Plymouth, but everyone was excellent on a fabulous night at London Road under the lights. What’s not to love about a game under lights at our place?

"It was a great contest between two of the sides expected to challenge for promotion played out in a superb atmosphere which both sets of fans helped to create.

"The defence has taken some criticism lately, but they stood up to a big test.

"We saw on Saturday that we can’t play in second or third gear at this level.

"If we do and we don’t put the hard yards in we will get beaten.”
