The city side have moved out of the National League drop zone after beating Southport 2-0 at PIMS Park last weekend and then claiming a deserved last-gasp equaliser to seal a 2-2 draw at Buxton on Tuesday.

Sports are now 20th, two points and a place above the relegation zone, but they are also just six points off seventh, the last of the play-off positions, after a run of seven points in their last three matches.

Sports will attempt to extend that run at mid-table Warrington on Saturday.

A Dan Lawlor penalty and a Ben Fowkes strike secured the win over Southport. Fowkes and Josh McCammon netted at Buxton with the latter striking in the 94th minute.

"The first game in our little unbeaten run was a result that was better than our performance,” Sports joint-boss Michael Gash admitted. “But we delivered a result and a performance to beat Southport and we were very good at Buxton to claim a point we deserved.

"We knew this level of performance was attainable and I couldn’t be happier with the players.

"Earlier in the season our heads would drop if we fell behind, but myself and Luke Steele (joint boss) as well as the senior players have spoken about this a lot and the response has been outstanding.

"We were behind twice at Buxton, but we kept going to the end and we were well worth a draw at least.

"It’s good to be outside the relegation places, but we want more. The division is so tight a couple of wins will shoot us further up the table.”

Gash praised the influence of midfielder McCammon on his side.

"Josh is dynamic and has quality,” Gash added. “But he also does the ugly side of the game well.

"The other midfielders were getting at him at Buxton as he started by giving the opposition too much room, but once he got tighter they couldn’t play through us and we looked the better team.

"And Josh’s finish was excellent. His first shot was blocked and other players might well have snatched at the second effort and sent the ball over the crossbar, but he stayed calm and produced a great finish."

Injury victims Ryan Fryatt, Jordan Nicholson, Sidney Pereira and Kaine Felix face fitness tests ahead of the Warrington game. Felix suffered a knee injury early in the game against Southport.

Sports will stay overnight before tackling Warrington.
