Peterborough Sports facing a crucial few days and FA Vase action for local non-league clubs
The city side will host top-flight rivals Banbury United in the third qualifying round of the world’s greatest knockout competition at the Bee Arena next Tuesday (October 13, 7.45pm).
Win that and Sports will be one more win away from the FA Cup first round proper.
But manager Jimmy Dean is demanding Sports take momentum into the big game by claiming a first league win of the season over Barwell at the Bee Arena tomorrow (October 10, 3pm).
Sports were held to a 1-1 home draw by King’s Langley on Tuesday, just days after beating lower level Stansted 4-2 in the second qualifying round of the Cup.
Josh Moreman bagged a hat-trick against Stansted and gave Sports the lead against King’s Langley. Sports have drawn three and lost one of their Premier Division matches so far this season.
“I have been frustrated by our start in the league,” Dean admitted. “Partly because we’ve edged most of the games we’ve played. I’m trying to stay positive and if we win Saturday and then win on Tuesday the start to the season doesn’t look too bad. Barwell lost 5-0 on Tuesday, but they are the sort of side capable of winning the next game 5-0 so we have to be careful.
“Banbury at home is a good FA Cup draw for us, but it’s also a good draw for them. To play a team from the same league at this stage of the competition is a bonus and they will be as confident of winning as we are. We are not sustaining our form for long enough in games at present.
“We were brilliant in the opening 30 minutes of the games against Stansted and King’s Langley, but we haven’t then reacted well to conceding a goal.
“We’re taking too many touches on the ball and it became a real dogfight on Tuesday night.”
Sports have a doubt over former Posh winger Jordan Nicholson, while Dan Jarvis remains on the sidelines.
“Jordan has a niggle,” Dean added. “But Josh Moreman is the gift who keeps on giving. His form and attitude have been outstanding.”
