Peterborough Sports are ready for belated FA Trophy revenge against top-class visitors

Manager Jimmy Dean has warned third round FA Trophy opponents Basford United not to expect another easy game against his Peterborough Sports side on Saturday.

The city side met Basford three times in the 2017-18 season and lost them all, including the club’s first ever game in the FA Trophy.

Basford remain a high class side, but Sports are a very different animal these days and they intend to prove it at the Bee Arena (3pm kick-off).

“We played Basford during the only four month period in the last six years when me and the club were struggling,” Dean stated.

“They were a top-class team in our division then and they are still very good.

“They’ve won their last eight matches and they were second in the Northern Premier Division when last season finished early, and they are second again now.

“They are packed with size and experience, but they play on a 3G surface and they won’t play on anything like that on Saturday. They only beat us 2-1 at our place on their last visit.

“Basford are a top end team in their league and I like to think we are a top end side in our league. We play at the same standard and I can only see a cracking tie.

“We came out of lockdown to deliver two outstanding FA Trophy performances and no matter what happens to us this weekend we have achieved our objective of playing competitive matches until Christmas.

Dion Sembie-Ferris (2), Dan Jarvis and Lewis Hilliard scored the goals in Sports’ 4-0 second round Trophy win at Hitchin on Saturday. They had won 5-1 at AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the first round.
