Burton would replace Dwayne Rankin at the helm of the struggling United Counties Premier Division side. He is believed to be taking experienced local boss Jan Czarnecki as his assistant.

It’s been a baptism of fire for club owners Scott Steward and Vince Gosling since taking control of Star in the summer.

Scott Goodwin was appointed as manager, but left before a ball was kicked leading to a hasty promotion of Dwayne Rankin from the role of reserve team manager.

Star are currently bottom of the Premier Division with just two points from 11 matches.

Burton quit as assistant manager to Mark Baines at United Counties Division One side Blackstones last month. He previously enjoyed a successful stint as manager of Yaxley Reserves.

The Peterborough Telegraph has so far failed to contact either the club owners or Burton, but a tweet announcing the managerial change is thought to have been posted and then taken down earlier this week.

Star did release a club statement from the owners last week. It read: “At this time, we know the absence of football is a tough obstacle to overcome.

“As the new owners of Peterborough Northern Star FC, we are delighted to be part of what will be a new era for the club. “The takeover came at one of the worst times in football. It hasn’t been an easy transition, however we are working hard behind the scenes to restructure and rebuild the club.

“We have good people around us working hard to get the club on track. These things will take time but we are here for the long term.

“There are many plans in place to develop a wider community atmosphere around the club. We wish to supportand promote young people in football, disabled football and develop further, women’s and girls’ football.

“We aim to be an example for others to follow and create a positive all-inclusive environment at PNSFC.”

The only local UCL game taking place this weekend is Pinchneck v ON Chenecks which will be played behind closed doors.

The League have agreed to let matches go ahead if both clubs want to play.

The Northern Premier League is expected to announce a further two-week delay to the re-start of their competition.
