PETERBOROUGH LEAGUE: Title fancies have terrific scrap, Stanground still top of the pile

Two Peterborough Premier Division title fancies, Netherton United and Pinchbeck United, slugged out a 3-3 draw at the Grange yesterday (August 6).

It was a topsy-turvey affair with Netherton leading 1-0 and then trailing 2-1 and 3-2 before Craig Spink equalised with three minutes to go.

Tom Randall scored the other two Netherton goals - one was a ‘worldie’ - with Tony Edwards (penalty), Nick Bishop and Tom Brooks scoring for Pinchbeck.

The fancied Peterborough Sports Reserve team started with a 6-0 thrashing of newly-promoted Stamford Lions as Gary Gibbs (2), new recruit Rikki Goodale, Gerard Evans, Carl Bird and Jack Barron all netting, while reigning champions Moulton Harrox opened with a 5-0 success at home to Stilton United. Martin Sandall scored twice for Harrox.

But, for the moment at least, everyone is chasing AFC Stanground Sports whose two wins so far have yielded 14 goals. Sam Cross bagged a hat-trick in a 7-0 win at Thorney yesterday.

Josh Russell, son of former Posh player and coach Kevin Russell, scored twice as Ketton beat Wisbech Reserves 3-1 at Pit Lane.

This match was marred by a red card for violent conduct by a Wisbech player who appeared to punch home centre-back Ben Waldron in the face 15 minutes from time.

Tom Gosling and James ward scored the goals as Holbeach United Reserves beat ICA Sports 2-0, while Langtoft United and Leverington fought out a rare 0-0 draw.

There is almost a full programme of Premier Division games in midweek with Netherton’s trip across the city to Sports Reserves on Wednesday (August 10), the pick of the action.
