March 19-25 1997

POSH: Barry Fry’s team are beaten 3-0 at Colchester in the second leg of their Autoglass Windscreens Shield Area final to lose 3-2 on aggregate. Ken Charlery was sent off before a ‘golden goal’ in extra time from Paul Abrahams won the tie and a trip to Wembley.

Posh: Liverpool legend Phil Neal is appointed assistant manager.

SWIMMING: Rachel Burgess of COPs won eight Cambs County titles.

FOOTBALL: Ortonians moved six points clear at the top of the Peterborough Premier Division after a Michael Dudley goal sealed a 1-0 win over Leverington. Manager Chris Judge accused rivals Moulton Harrox of ‘constant sniping at us.’

FOOTBALL: Nicky Papworth scored the goal as a Perkins team including a couple of old Posh players beat Plessey (Liverpool) in the quarter-finals of the National Vets Cup at London Road.

RUGBY UNION: Chris Jones kicked 13 points as Borough beat Coalville 21-10 in Midlands Division One.

FOOTBALL: Ortonians Reserves beat Alconbury 3-2 to stay five points clear at the top of Peterborough League Division One. Collis Augustine, Mark Burbridge and Kevin King scored the goals for the city side.

March 19-25 1987

POSH: Noel Cantwell’s promotion-chasing team were surprisingly beaten by next-to-bottom Rochdale in a Division Four fixture. Dave Gregory scored twice for fourth-placed Posh. Wolves were level on points in fifth.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates beat Slough Jets 11-5 in a Heineken Premier Division match. Garry Unger, Todd Bidney, Tim Peacock and Kenny MacDonald all scored twice.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town beat Bury St Edmunds 3-2 in the East League. Neville Keir, Mike Yeoman and Phil Webber scored the goals with captain Martin Collcott purring: “for 25 mintes we were unstoppable.”

RUGBY UNION: Borough couldn’t recover from a terrible start to their 34-22 defeat at Loughborough. Alan Griffin (2) , Kev Roe and Danny Kitching scored their tries.

FOOTBALL: Dave English cracked a hat-trick as Perkins beat Wisbech Reserves 4-0 to stay four points clear at the top of the Peterborough Premier Division.

CRICKET: Peterborough’s indoor side of Adrian Cade, Martin Stephenson, Neil Taylor, Bob Milne, Ged McDougall, John McDougall and Andy Walker beat Nottingham by 60 runs.

POSH: Noel Cantwell’s side were four minutes away from ending a run of 25 away matches without a win when Robbie Cooke headed an equaliser for Mansfield. Dave Gregory had fired Posh into an early lead.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers were crushed 68-40 in their opening meeting of the season at Eastbourne. Andy Hines top scored with nine points.

RUGBY UNION: Stamford beat Borough 12-6 in the semi-final of the ET Cup. Pete Gregory scored the decisive try as John Williams kicked two penalties for Borough.

POSH: Captain Chris Turner announced he was to take up a short-term contract with Connecticut Bi-Centennials in the United States.

HOCKEY: Snooker pro Markham Wildman scored as Baker Perkins beat RAF Wyton 3-2 in a mixed match. Bob Cave and Jenny Mills also scored for BP.

FOOTBALL: Peterborough Boys beat Wisbech 5-1 in the Cambs Cup. Tim Gale scored two and created two. Martin Earle, Nigel Evans and an opponent also scored.

DARTS: Terry Barron, John Gilson, John Hunt, Jim Cunningham, Ian Tallentire, Bill Brown, Roy Birch, Ray Bosworth and Roger Beeby won as Halcyon whitewashed Golden Lion in the Tuesday Cup Final.

POSH: Goalkeeper Tony Millington was a clear man-of-the-match as Gordon Clark’s sided lost a Third Division game 1-0 at Oldham.

RUGBY UNION: Barry Vanstone kicked a penalty and a conversion as he moved to 99 points in his quest to become the first Peterborough Town player for a decade to score 100 points for the season. Jack Dixon, and Ken Smith scored Borough’s other points in a 17-5 win over South Leicester.

HOCKEY: Peter Stimpson scored the only goal as Hunts & Peterborough beat Suffolk 1-0 in a County match.

POSH: John Fairborther, Tommy Watson, Ian Crawford and John Mason scored as Posh beat Kettering 4-2 in a Northants Senior Cup semi-final tie.

FOOTBALL: Eastholm beat Stanground 2-1 in the final of the Peterborough Primary Schools Cup. Geoff Aukland opened the scoring for Stanground, but Geoff Vines and Richard Leech scored to win the day for Eastholm. Ex-Posh star-turned-teacher Peter Deakin refereed the game.

POSH: A crowd of 1,763 watched the reserves lose 3-1 to Coventry City at London Road. John Mason scored the Posh consolation goal.
