Star, who have been in dreadful form in the United Counties Premier Division, sprang a quarter-final shock last night (March 15) with a 2-0 win over Stotfold at Chestnut Avenue.

Top scorer Craig Smith grabbed both goals in the third and 59th minutes to set up a repeat of last year’s final which was won by Star. Peterborough Sports are waiting in the final.

There was also a Premier Division shock at Fenland Park last night where Wisbech Town’s run of eight games without defeat came to a disappointing end.

It looked a home banker as opponents Harrowby had lost their last six matches, but a solitary goal 12 minutes from time won the game for the visitors.

A waterlogged pitch meant Yaxley’s scheduled trip to Northampton Spencer was postponed.

Stamford predictably lost 4-1 at home to high-flying Darlington 1883 in the Evo Stik Northern Premier Division after a very long night.

Half the visiting team were caught in an A1 traffic jam causing the kick off to be delayed by 45 minutes to 8.30pm.

Stamford held their own for an hour before Darlo hit their stride with four goals in the final 30 minutes.

Samuel Hill’s goal briefly gave the Daniels hope by maiking the score 2-1, but the visitors eventually cruised home.

Stamford remain a point outside the relegation zone, but they have played more games than their closest rivals.
