NON-LEAGUE: Champions Peterborough Sports are not finished yet!

The all-conquering city side have already wrapped up the United Counties Division One title with five games to spare, but Dean says his side have plenty of important, unfinished business.

Sports were a dominant force in the league since day one. They won their first 21 Division One matches and currently sit 21 points clear of the rest with a playing record of 28 wins and three defeats from 31 games.

Their goal difference is a staggering plus 100 (that’s 66 goals better than the rest) and they have a perfect winning home record.

Sports sealed the title success with with Easter home wins over Bugbrooke St Michaels (6-1) and Thrapston (1-0), but the city side could still win three more trophies.

Sports have reached the finals of the United Counties League Cup, the Hinchingbrooke Cup and the Northants Junior Cup.

And what an ‘awesome foursome’ trophy-haul that would be in Dean’s first season as a manager.

“The lads have been unebeleivable all season,” Dean stated. “I couldn’t have wished for a better set of players in my first season as the manager.

“We have some quality, but we also work hard. We recruited well and we have posted some outrageous statistics. We picked up players who weren’t wanted by Yaxley, who were playing for Peterborough Northern Star Reserves, who were playing for Thrapston and who hadn’t played for three years.

“Winning the first 21 games is a ridiculous achievement at any level of football and the club deserves to celebrate long and hard.

“We did celebrate last weekend, but it’s back to business tomorrow (April 2) when we want to protect our perfect home record against Stewart & Lloyds. They are the only team we haven’t beaten so far this season so we want to put that right.

“I have no doubt the players will remain committed in the league because they will want to secure their cup final places. The season could get a lot better yet.”

Stewart & Lloyds pipped Sports 2-1 at the end of February. Sports have also lost to second-placed ON Chenecks and Long Buckby, but have already beaten those teams at Fortress PSL. Tomorrow’s game, the last at home of Sports’ season, kicks off at 3pm.

Sports will be hot favourites to beat Peterborough League Premier Division side Netherton United in the Northants Junior Cup Final at Peterborough United’s ABAX Stadium on Tuesday, April 26. They play leading Premier Division side Holbeach United in the final of the United Counties League Cup at Deeping Rangers FC on Monday, May 2 and they are awaiting the winners of a Hinchingbrooke Cup semi-final between Deeping Rangers and Peterborough Northern Star.

The Hinchingbrooke Cup Final is also scheduled to take place at Deeping.

Yaxley host Deeping Rangers in a local United Counties Premier Division game tomorrow (3pm).
