MATCH REACTION: Serious Angol injury takes gloss off first summer success

Comfirmation of a serious injury to striker Lee Angol took the gloss of a first friendly win of the summer for Peterborough United tonight (July 11).

Angol faces a lengthy absence after fracturing his tibia in Saturday’s (July 9) draw at Boston United. The 21 year-old had an operation to pin the fracture yesterday.

Without Angol, Posh won 1-0 at National League side Boreham Wood thanks to a penalty early in the second-half from Marcus Maddison.

Posh boss Grant McCann, who gave former London Road star Paul Taylor a 45-minute run-out tonight, said: “It’s not good news about Lee at all. I went to see him in hospital and he’s devastated, but hopefully he will come back stronger. “I was really looking forward to watching Lee play this season. He had a good first season with us, but he was looking physically stronger in training.

“These things happen in football though and we have to get on with things. It was another good workout at Boreham against a good, strong side with plenty of old Football League professionals.

“The first-half team passed the ball well without scoring, but we scored early in the second-half and held on for the win. We got everything we wanted from the game, plus a win. We were sloppy at times, but pre-season is for getting rid of that sloppiness.

“The youngsters stood up to everything well and Lewis Freestone was again excellent. I can’t put too much pressure on him, but he is getting better all the time. You can see how much he wants it by looking into his eyes.

“Paul Taylor did well. he’s rusty, but you can still see that edge in his game that makes him so hard to play against. He has the change of pace and the ability to turn defenders and cause them problems.”

Posh should have Gwion Edwards, Michael Smith and Jermaine Anderson available for the first time for Saturday’s (July 16) friendly against Championship side Norwich City at the ABAX Stadium. Goalkeeper Mark Tyler and young striker Matty Stevens might also be available after missing the first two friendlies.

That match will be played over four 30-minute quarters and most of the Posh first-team squad will see an hour of action apiece.
