MATCH REACTION: McCann delighted with five-star Peterborough United, but claims there is even more to come

Peterborough United manager Grant McCann praised a five-star, five-goal performance from his players tonight (December 12), but immediately claimed they are capable of much more.

Two goals from Jack Marriott and strikes from Michael Doughty - his first for the club - Marcus Maddison (penalty) and Gwion Edwards helped Posh to a 5-2 FA Cup second round replay win over National League Woking at the Abax Stadium. Three of the goals arrived in the final 20 minutes, straight after Woking had levelled the match at 2-2.

Posh will now travel to Championship hopefuls Aston Villa in the third round on Saturday, January 6, but only after a hectic run of five League One matches.

“We could have won 10-2 tonight,” McCann insisted. “We played aggressive, attacking football and created many, many chances. We should have scored more and we will need to convert more of the chances we create, but that was a very pleasing all-round team pereformance.

“I held my hands up after the first game as I got my tactics wrong. It was a different story tonight as we went after them and with a bit more ruthlessness we could have had a huge score.

“But getting into the next round was the main thing and I felt we controlled the game for the most part. Woking are a good counter attacking team as they showed with their second goal, but we were far more dangerous when we had possession.

“Their goalkeeper was excellent to keep the score down and I’m delighted we have given the fans a chance of another great day out at Aston Villa. We will go there and try and play our game. We won’t be playing defensively at all.

“But that’s for the future. We have to take this form into some tricky League One matches now.”

Posh are at Fleetwood on Sunday (December 17), a venue that has seen two weak Posh performances in each of the last two seasons, but McCann believes he has players running into form.

“Gwion, Jack and Marcus are a real threat,” McCann added. “And Michael Doughty had his best game for the club and deserved his goal.

“Tha was how he played for Swindon against us. He likes to arrive on the edge of the penalty area to score goals.”
