Peterborough Town and Oundle Town vying for top spot, the A15 derby at the Abbey Lawns and the rest of the big weekend games

Revenge for unbeaten Peterborough Town was sweet last weekend and now the city side are determined to complete the first half of a unique season in style.

Town returned to the top of the Northants Premier Division by hammering Finedon at Bretton Gate last weekend and the target now is to make sure they win their final match to book a favourable tie in the first of the play-off matches.

That won’t be easy as Geddington are their visitors tomorrow (August 29, 11am). Geddington slipped from first to fifth after suffering a shock reverse at the hands of Desborough last weekend.

“Finishing top doesn’t mean much this season,” Town skipper David Clarke said. “But it’s still something we want to achieve, if only because it will give us a tie against the eighth-place finishers in the play-off quarter-final.

“Geddington have good players though and they will be smarting after losing to Desborough.

“The fact they dropped several places after losing one game shows how tight the competition has been and what could happen to us if we slip up.”

Town are expected to be unchanged after demolishing Finedon by eight wickets, a fine response to the drubbing they suffered in the same fixture last season.

Oundle Town operate with far less fanfare than their powerful neighbours, but they could easily finish top of the table in a shortened Northants Premier Division season.

Oundle scrambled to a two-wicket win at lowly Brixworth last weekend, but a fourth success in six top-flight matches means they go into the final round of games in second place, just two points behind the boys from Bretton Gate.

Oundle’s final match ahead of the play-offs is against Desborough at Milton Road tomorrow (11am).

Neither team is in great form, but it should still be a tasty affair when neighbours Bourne and Market Deeping clash in the A15 Lincs Premier Division derby at the Abbey Lawns on Saturday (noon).
