Golden Gary helps Wisbech stay perfect

Wisbech reached the final over requiring two wickets to beat Saffron Walded seconds on another belting batting wicket at Harecroft Road and off-spinner Freear promptly dismissed two batsmen with the first two balls!

“I only bowled the final over because it was too dark for the seamers to bowl,” captain Freear admitted.

Wisbech had piled up 272-7 in just 39 overs with Freear leading the way with 58 and in-form Danny Haynes making 54 and the extra overs the home side gave themselves to bowl their visitors out proved crucial. Walden had looked likely winners when reaching 203-4, but Freear’s 4-54 helped seal another maximum points victory.

Wisbech share top spot with Godmanchester and Ketton who have also collected the maximum 50 points from two matches. Matthew Pateman’s unbeaten 114 set Goddy up for a 132-run win over Warboys, while Ketton slammed Waresley by nine wickets at Pit Lane.

Spinners Matt Milner (4-23) and Ulrich Ven Duyker (4-37) were the star men as Waresley were dismissed for 124 and Ben Bryant (56no) and Jacob ‘Dusty’ Miller (55no) soon sped Ketton to victory. Miller has now claimed back-to-back half centuries after never before passing 50 at Cambs League level.

Reigning Division One champions Ramsey are already 22 points behind the leaders after just two games. Yesterday ‘The Rams’ were bored into submission by Foxton at Cricketfield Lane.

Ramsey’s 245-9 in 48 overs was useful, but by no means insurmountable on a decent track, but the visitors lost early wickets and then shut up shop closing on 128-6, also from 48 overs.

Jordan Cafferkey (96) top scored for Ramsey, while there were also handy all-round displays from Trent Goers and Mark Edwards.

Nassington opening batsman Dan Robinson has started the season in terrific form. He scored 75 in defeat against Godmanchester on the opening day of the season and followed that up with 108 against March yesterday.

That was more than half of Nassington’s total of 200, a score that looked vulnerable when David Hodson was scoring 40 from just 20 balls at the top of the March order.

But his departure led to a steady fall of wickets and March were eventually bowled out for 172. Kiwi import Ash Vodnala made 21 on his March debut.

In Division Two Newborough batted poorly in a four-wicket defeat at Blunham, but Khalsa made it two wins out of two with a 30-run win at Cambridge NCI. The city side are the ealy pacesetters as the only team with maximum points from their first two games.

The Lincs Premier Division was ruined by rain yesterday with only Spalding’s match at Bracebridge Heath reaching a conclusion.

Spalding fell to a last-over 117-run defeat in a rain-affected game, but captain Rob Amsbrose was happy with the 10 points his side gained from the game - more than most teams who didn’t finish received.

Bracebridge smashed 350-3 in just 42 overs and two balls and it took them almost 55 overs to dismiss Spalding for a creditable 233. Nayun Jayasena scored 75 of those batting at number seven.

Reigning champions Bourne were struggling at Sleaford when their match was abandoned, although Colin Cheer had the consolation of snaring former Test player Tim McIntosh for just 13.

Skegness reached 206-8 at home to Market Deeping when that game was halted.
