Gill looking for a sweet 16 on the big world championship bill

The 21 year-old from Chatteris looks to extend his unbeaten record to 16 fights at the Sheffield Arena on Saturday, March 26.

In the top-of-the-bill fight, Kell Brook, Gill’s stablemate at the Ingles’ gym in Sheffield, defends his IBF welterweight title against Kevin Bizier, from Canada. The fight will be screened live on Sky Sports.

For the first time in his promising ring career, Gill will be matched over eight rounds - and there’s a possibility he could face Josh Wale.

Wale, a former British and Commonwealth title challenger from Barnsley, is ranked No 9 in the latest domestic rankings published by trade paper ‘Boxing News.’

Gill, currently ranked No 14 at super-featherweight by the same publication, said: “Beating him would push me on. I would be in the top 10 and then I’m close to a big fight.

“Even if the fight doesn’t come off, it shows they are looking to step me up this year.

“I’m just going to keep winning and if I keep doing that, I will get a shot.”

Given that last time out Wale was well beaten by Leigh Wood, another Ingles’ fighter and Gill’s housemate, and who has also been schooled by Kid Galahad, another from the Sheffield gym, there’s every chance he won’t take the fight.

At 27 years-old and after 28 fights - many of them punishing - Wale may not fancy a fight against a fresh, slick talent like Gill.

Whoever Gill faces, the fight will be made at nine stones.

He has yet to make the featherweight limit for a fight - he was just half-a-pound over for a points win over Michael Mooney in May, 2014 - and he’s convinced he will make the weight comfortably enough and “make an attack on the featherweight division.”

Gill, who thrashed Harvey Hemsley inside two rounds in his last fight in December, expects to be sparring Brook in the next few weeks.

Brook is making his third defence of the IBF title he took from Shawn Porter in Sheffield and Gill said: “When Kell has a sharp, fast opponent they usually put me in with him for a bit of sparring to keep him on his toes. I have to be quick in there. Getting hit by Kell isn’t any fun.”
