The penultimate round of the East Midland Winter League saw anglers lining the banks of the Old Nene at March more than a little worried the fish would not show up after two heavy frosts.

But once again it didn’t disappoint producing a fantastic match despite the wintry conditions with every section won with over 10lb, most with more than 17lb.

If proof were ever needed that this is an amazing venue then this result provided it.

It turned out to be a brilliant day for Hotrods anglers as they achieved several section wins and had the top three anglers overall too.

In pole position on the day with 26lb 1oz was Steve Welford. Fishing at three metres and five metres he caught all day on bread to put an excellent weight together at Wigstone Bridge.

Team-mate Ricky Young fished an excellent match on hemp to weigh in 23lb 4oz from behind the library.

Colin Oakman is in fine form and once again made the frame this time from the Health Centre bridge, catching on bread and pinkies to weigh in 22lb 13oz.

Stanjay rod Graham Welton put 21lb 12oz on the scales for fourth place, again at the Library.

The day got even better for Hotrods as they won a hard fought battle with Stanjay’s to claim top spot on the team front. And with previous league leaders Matrix Image slipping up they now have a very commanding three-point lead at the top of the table going into round six.

The last match is on Benwick, High Lode and Factory Bank.

TONY EVANS LEAGUE

Round two of the Tony Evans Winter League fished on Decoy Lakes saw Chris Barley top a very strong field with a fine 189lb from the Elm Pool.

Drawn on peg nine, he fished the pole all day, feeding micro pellets and fishing 4ml pellet on the hook.

Most of the main action then switched to the Damson Pool, a water not usually fished by the big match anglers as it’s deemed to be nowhere near as good or consistent as the other lakes on the complex.

That could all change now though as it produced some good weights considering the conditions.

Leading the chasing pack was Richard Bond, who was kept busy with small carp all day, finishing on 89lb 14oz. Then came Steve Freeman with 89lb 5oz, followed by John Whincup weighing 88lb.

Early league standings: 1 Jon Whincup, 2pts, 196lb; 2 Simon Dow, 2pts, 149lb 05oz; 3 Tom Edwards, 2pts, 65lb 02oz.

JVAC

You know winter is just around the corner when the JVAC lads struggle for fish. And that’s what happened in their latest club match fished on the Willows Pool at Decoy Lakes.

However there were some respectable weights recorded, none better than the 44lb 11oz net of carp put to the scales all taken on the pole with pellet by Gus Gausden from peg 33.

Runner-up was Nick Carlton with 44lb 5oz from peg 29, followed by John Seeley on a level 37lb.
