The yellow alert stated: “Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms on Monday - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.”

A Met Office spokesman added: “Not everywhere will see them, but where they do occur they could be significant and disruptive.”

The alert covers much of the south of the country and is in place until Thursday (August 13).

Temperatures in Peterborough are expected to top 31C (87.8F) today (Monday, August 10), 32C (98.6F) tomorrow before dropping to 26C (78.8F) on Thursday.

Trevor Robbins-Pratt from the city’s respected peterboroughweatherwatch.com website said: “We have the threat from both home grown and imported thunderstorms over the next few days.

“There is risk on Monday, however there doesn’t seem to be enough instability in the upper air to tap into, so it looks like a low risk of home grown storms, although the threat of imported storms is there.

“The highest risk for storms on Monday looks to be in Central and Western areas of the UK.

“There’s greater instability through Tuesday across the East, obviously including Peterborough, so there appears to be a higher risk of thunderstorms developing, particularly in late afternoon and during the evening, and of course we still also have the threat from imported storms.

“Wednesday afternoon and evening looks like a more widespread risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms across England.

“On Thursday. the risk continues, but at a few days out, it really is difficult to put any detail on where and when.”
