Heavy downpours could hit Peterborough this weekend in brief respite from ‘exceptionally dry’ summer - here's when

A weak weather front is set to push across England

Heavy downpours could hit Peterborough this weekend, providing some much needed respite from the hot and dry conditions the city has experienced so far this summer.

An Anglian Water hosepipe ban came into force on Saturday, July 11, prompted by weeks of exceptionally dry weather and scorching temperatures.

Peterborough has gone weeks without any significant rainfall, leading to bone-dry gardens, parks and grass verges.

But things look set to change this weekend, with a weak weather front predicted to bring some much needed rain to much of England.

Steve Willington, Met Office chief forecaster, said: “The high pressure has been a key feature of the UK’s weather forecast over the last few weeks, bringing above-average temperatures and extremely dry conditions for many.

“However, we will begin to see a modest change as a weak weather front pushes south across the UK on Saturday, bringing some much-needed rain, albeit light and mainly concentrated in the North and West.

“Behind the front, a showery air mass will bring potentially heavy showers, some of which may be thundery.”

How much rain could Peterborough get this weekend?

Areas in the north are likely to experience heavy rainfall late on Saturday (July 25), but it probably won’t be until the following morning when Peterborough gets a soaking.

The showers will make their way from north to south over the course of Sunday (July 26), with up to 4mm per hour possible.

Some of the showers could be thundery, running the risk of certain areas accumulating standing water due to the dry conditions.

By around 7pm the rain will have passed, making way for sunny intervals and highs of 23C.
