St Paul’s Road in the city was left under several inches of water on a number occasions following storms throughout the summer.

Peterborough MP Paul Bristow wrote to Anglian Water asking for action to be taken to prevent it happening again in the future - and while Anglian Water said the main cause of the incidents was the volume of rain water, they said they would look at what could be done.

Mr Bristow said: “The flooding causes significant distress, with dirty water coming up to houses, and requires a significant clean up effort. The closure of one of Peterborough’s busiest roads also causes significant disruption.”

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “Following the recent flooding on St Paul’s Road in Peterborough, our teams are currently checking our network to ensure there are no issues. Initial investigations show that the sheer amount of rainfall overwhelmed the watercourse.

“In order to ensure that our assets are working to the best of their ability, our teams will be carrying out work to ensure there are no blockages in the network, which can be caused by a build-up of fats and unflushable items such as sanitary products and wet wipes being wrongfully disposed.

“We will continue to liaise with the Lead Local Flood Authority to assess whether any repairs or other work is required in the area. Flooding is an extremely complex issue with many different owners for the drainage networks such as Highways, local councils, private owners, as well as ourselves.”
