Peterborough drivers urged to get their vehicles "winter-ready" as part of police road safety campaign
Drivers across Peterborough are being reminded to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions in a bid to keep themselves and others safe on the roads.
With darker evenings and colder weather now here, Cambridgeshire Constabulary has launched its winter checks campaign as part of its ongoing commitment to road safety.
The initiative aims to reduce collisions and breakdowns caused by poorly maintained vehicles over the winter months.
A force spokesperson explained: “As part of National Road Safety Week, Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Adrian Boddington and his team spoke to more than 300 people at pop up stalls in Huntingdon, Hampton, Ely, Bar Hill and Peterborough. They encouraged motorists to carry out essential checks before setting off and highlighted the importance of ongoing vehicle maintenance in preventing accidents.

“The team also engaged with more than 500 children, providing road safety advice and discussing issues including drink driving, speeding, e-scooter use and cycle security.”
PC Boddington said: “Winter driving brings extra challenges, from icy roads to reduced visibility and a well-maintained vehicle can make all the difference.
“Simple checks on tyre tread, windscreen wash, dashboard warnings and working lights can prevent breakdowns and even save lives. We’re asking drivers to take a few minutes before every journey to make sure their vehicle is safe and ready for the conditions.”
Drivers are urged to think FLOWER before setting off.
• Fuel – Do you have enough to get to your destination?
• Lights – Ensure headlights, brake lights and indicators are all working.
• Oil – Check levels when the engine is cold. They should be between the two markings on the dipstick
• Water – Top up lubricants, coolants and washer fluid
• Electrics – Check your battery’s health especially during the colder months.
• Rubber – Inspect tyres for pressure, tread depth, uneven wear and sidewall damage. Also check wiper blades.
