The council once again scored highly in the annual National Highways and Transport (NHT) survey, which asks residents for their views on highway and transport services carried out by local authorities.

Peterborough has been ranked as the best highways authority in the eastern region for the past three years, but this year has gone one better by claiming the top spot nationally.

The largest positive difference from the NHT average was for 'condition of road surfaces’ which was 16% above average.

Peterborough was ranked in the top ten of all participating authorities for 67 of the individual indicators.

The indicator for ‘road safety education of young drivers’ was ranked 1st, as was the indicator for ‘reliability of taxis or minicabs’.

Councillor Peter Hiller, cabinet member for strategic planning and commercial strategy and investments, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have ranked as the country’s top highway authority for public satisfaction. That is testament to the hard work and dedication of our highways and transport teams who help ensure that residents, commuters, visitors and businesses can travel swiftly and safely across our city.

“This year's survey focused on important areas including cycle routes, bus services, road conditions, street lighting and traffic congestion. There were also new questions canvassing opinion on our response to climate change issues and changing travel habits.

"The NHT survey helps us understand the views of residents and work together to deliver efficient services. We are always keen to hear residents' views and that’s why this survey is vitally important, so I would also like to thank everyone who took part. Over the coming weeks further evaluation will take place to understand the areas where our highways service can improve how we serve the residents of Peterborough.”
