Man airlifted to hospital after A47 crash is ‘serious but stable’

The accident involved a van and a lorry and happened near Wansford at 7.20am on Wednesday (October 8).

The van left the road in the collision and struck nearby trees, leaving a man in his 20s severely trapped inside the vehicle.

Doctor Sarah Hazleman and Paramedic Steve Chambers from the medical charity Magpas Helimedix flew to the scene of the crash and provided the critical care needed to stabilise the patient, who had suffered multiple injuries.

They sedated the patient and continued to work alongside a Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Crew to get the man safely out of the van.

He was then anaesthetised and provided with intensive, critical A&E care at the roadside, before being flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, which also attended the scene said:” One man was flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by Magpas after receiving serious injuries to his chest, head and legs.

“Two other casualties were taken to Peterborough City Hospital suffering minor injuries.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “The collision involving a black van and a white lorry happened on the A47, at its junction with Cooks Hole Quarry, near Thornhaugh, at about 7.15am.

“The driver of the van, which left the road, suffered serious injuries, described as life threatening.

The driver of the lorry, a 56-year-old man from Milton Keynes, suffered slight injuries.”

The A47 was closed in both directions westbound between Wansford and the A43 at Doddington until around 10.45am.

Witnesses to the crash are asked to call Cambridgeshire police on 101.
