Improvement works for 'disgraceful' Town Bridge not set to take place for at least a year
Peterborough City Council is set to push back works to improve Town Bridge for at least a year due to ongoing traffic issues in other areas of the city centre.
At Wednesday’s full council meeting, Councillor Ed Murphy asked the council when action would be taken on the state of Town Bridge; asking when action would be taken to repair rendering, clean and repaint the bridge.
In his question to Cabinet Member Councillor Angus Ellis, Cllr Murphy described the state of the bridge as ‘disgraceful.’
In response, Cllr Ellis recognised the need for the works to be carried out but said that the council would be unable to do so without road closures and that the council did not wish to do so while the ongoing Station Quarter works at Queensgate were taking place.

The works could be added to the council’s plan for the 2027/28 financial year.
Cllr Ellis said: “Town Bridge is structurally sound although I recognise that it does need improvements to the render and paintwork from an aesthetic perspective.
"As a major thoroughfare, carrying out these works will require road closures. Given that we already have traffic management in place for the Station Quarter, we will wait for these to be removed before work on Town Bridge commences to avoid unnecessarily delaying motorists more than they need to be.
“I expect the works to be programmed in to take place sometime in the next financial year.
“As soon as we got the wonderful City Link finished we will move onto getting some of these other jobs done.”
