Last year, the city council received funding of around £175,000 from the Government which was spent on measures including temporary lanes in Crescent Bridge, Priestgate, New Road, City Road and a small section of Lower Broadway.

The money for the emergency cycling and walking measures was granted in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and a cross-party working group of councillors is currently discussing how to spend another £470,000 which is available to use.

The lanes in New Road, Priestgate and City Road have now been removed but not before 49 drivers were issued with a penalty charge notice (PCN).

The council said between April and December last year 33 PCNs were issued in Priestgate and 16 in City Road.

All of the fines were for parking in a space which was suspended for the purpose of putting the lanes in, rather than for driving on the road.

The PCNs are £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
