A47 closed by flooding as drivers warned to take care on Peterborough roads

The A47 near Peterborough has been closed by flooding as police warned drivers to take care on roads in the city following torrential rain.

Highways England said this evening (Wednesday (December 23), that the A47 is closed westbound between the A1139 and the A16 near Peterborough, due to flooding.

A statement said: “The road is closed due to flooding on A47 Eastbound from A1 to J15 A1260 Nene Parkway.

“Flooding in the area has also triggered the road closure and surrounding congestion.”

Cambridgeshire police are at the scene and drivers have been warned to take care on all the city’s roads as large areas of standing water have accumulated due to today’s heavy rain.

Cambridgeshire police said on social media: “There is a lot of surface water about due to the heavy rain, please drive to the road and water conditions.

There have been a number of Road Traffic Collisions.

Cambridgeshire fire and rescue said it had received many calls due to flooding. A statement on social media said: “We are receiving a large number of calls relating to bad weather across the county. This includes flooding due to the large volume of rain falling in a short time.

“So far we have responded to incidents in Ramsey, Kimbolton, Tilbrook, Alconbury, Woodwalton and Elm. Please take care and do not drive through flood water - it’s not worth the risk!

“We have crews ready to respond, but please only call 999 if there is a danger to life.”
